Stop Gambling
Did you know that when an element of risk is involved, the brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that produces euphoria? As with drug addiction, and high risk sports, people gamble because they enjoy the increased levels of dopamine. Moreover, it can become addictive.
What’s more, some experiments with rhesus macaque monkeys at Duke University in America, in which they were given the option of gambling to receive awards of fruit juice, have shown that they overwhelmingly preferred to gamble even when the odds were stacked against them. Even with a string of losses, the high of the occasional win kept them gambling for their reward of juice, rather than go for the guaranteed juice-win option.
For our ancient ancestors hunting for food, it paid to gamble. In fact, without gambling none would have survived. If for example, it was necessary to search forty places for one chance of finding edible fruit, it would have made no sense to stop after one or two goes. However, looking in forty places is fine when the terrain is safe. Achieving that big win is just a matter of time.
So it’s part of our survival mechanism to gamble, and betting companies who play on that also put a lot of effort into making the terrain appear safe. However, in reality, it is high-risk and low-yield, especially the longer you play. They couldn’t continue in business if they hadn’t worked out their enticing formula very carefully, making you believe that a big win is just round the corner, while at the same time, fleecing you of your money. How many times have you heard yourself think, “Just one more go and I’ll win everything back?” Statistically it just isn’t going to happen. You’re simply throwing yet more money away.
Worse still you can get into that self-destructive cycle of needing that win to make up for, and cover up all the stupid, mindless losses you’ve manifested. You just don’t seem to know how to stop gambling. You feel like you have to keep going. Any minute now it’ll all come good. But it never does, does it? The betting companies understand full well your psychology: your desire to make it big; to get something for nothing; just for once, for some money to come your way without having to work for it; to rebel against the oppression of rising costs of living, taxes, your disappointments and dissatisfaction with life.
Yet while you’re riding that wave of excitement and anticipation, you’re able to escape those realities of your life. Those disappointments. Your dissatisfaction. Gambling gives you an opportunity to zone out, to live in fantasy, to get some relief from the stress and strain of life, at least for as long as you can prolong the illusion.
But illusion is what it is. What happens when you are forced back to reality? How do you feel when you’ve lost again?
And how will your life look in 10 years from now? Will you still have meaningful, loving relationships with your partner, spouse, children; the rest of your family? What about friends? Are they still there for you? Or will you, like the majority of gamblers, be looking at separation, divorce, resentment and anger from your family? Will you have lost your house or your job, as so many gamblers do? Are your friends still around, or have they given up trying to help?
Will you be feeling good about yourself, 10 years from now? Or will all remnants of self-esteem and self-respect be shot away?
