EMDR is a very useful and effective technique to help people let go of symptoms developed as a result of a traumatic event. This might happen when their brain has been unable to effectively process overwhelming and upsetting information, and instead, overloads the individual’s ability to cope.
The goal of EMDR is to process the memory traces in such a way that the negative associations drop away, leaving only a neutral memory of the event itself.
This means that instead of finding themselves constantly hijacked by an over-active stress response, clients adequately process the memory, storing it safely and comfortably, allowing them to get on with their lives.
EMDR is very effective with anxiety-related problems such as:
- Panic attacks
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Upsetting memories e.g. divorce, bereavement, accidents, war, natural disasters etc
- Emotional eating
- Fear of abandonment
- Chronic pain
