There's the hard way...
Back in 2006 an announcement was made by some excited scientists who had developed a drug which allowed 90% of patients to lose an average of 7.7 kg (17lbs) and to keep it off for at least a year - people who previously had been unable to lose weight by dieting or exercise.
The drug, sibultramine, was pronounced safe and effective and could help prevent obesity-linked health problems such as stroke, heart disease and diabetes.
This wonder pill, like so many others, has since been suspended from use, and serious concerns are now being expressed about its safety.
Back in the 70s, Robert Atkins devised a high protein diet, claiming that it worked because digesting protein burns more energy than digesting carbohydrates and also because calories are lost in urine in a process called ketosis.
Instead, it was found in 2005 that the reason for losing weight was that participants were eating an average of 1000 calories a day fewer than they had been previously, because they had no desire to eat more - and this accounted for the weight loss. During the trial their blood glucose levels and insulin sensitivity also improved dramatically.
However, the risks and benefits of the Atkins diet are still a subject of controversy. Some studies have shown that it helps prevent cardiovascular disease, lowers bad cholesterol and raises good cholesterol. Other studies have found that the diet contributes to cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, arrhythmia, osteoporosis and kidney stones.
No wonder we don't know whether we're coming or going when it comes to nutrition and staying healthy. My view is that resorting to drugs or to extreme diets is likely to be damaging at least in the long-term if not in the short term.
And there's the easy way...
The good news is that there is a much healthier, much more reliable way to lose weight and stay slim. And that is to learn to think and eat like a slim person. And this is probably easier than you think! Many people have already done so.
